Elnora "Nona" (Schiewe) Hurias

Date of birth  - December 6, 1926

Date of death  - November 28, 2022

Nona's only wish in life was to pass away before her children. Nona's wish came true on November 28 peacefully in the Guilford Senior Care Home just a few blocks away from her daughter's house in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Nona was born in Clarkes, OR on December 6, 1926 in her Grandma and Grandpa Lindau's house only a few miles from her Mom (Esther Lindau Schiewe) and Dad's (Julius Schiewe) house. There she grew up with 3 brothers, Fred, Gib, Webb and 1 sister, Betty. All have preceded Nona in death.

Nona is survived by her daughter, Betty Lorraine McKee (Dennis) of Milwaukie and son, Jim Wayne Huiras (Mende) of Pendleton; granddaughters, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and treasured friends.

Nona attended Meadowbrook Grade School. She walked two miles downhill to school everyday and then back home the two miles uphill. She lived on a farm where her Mom grew the most beautiful flowers. People would come from Portland just to see the pretty landscaping. After attending Molalla Union High School, Nona and two of her friends would spend the summers at her Dad's cousin Dina's, boarding house. Nona and her friends would work downtown Portland at Kress' Department Store or Crystal Laundry which is now the KATU broadcast building on Sandy Boulevard. The neighbors commented to Dina one day that the girls were the noisiest girls she ever had in her house. Nona and her friends would love to laugh and that never changed with Nona. One of the memories Nona had while working at Crystal's was getting up on some tables to look out the window to see President Truman pass by in a parade. She also remembers wearing hats, gloves and suits to shop in Portland during World War II. She would comment on how things have changed when being taken to Portland during more recent times. Nona was always known to have a love of gold hoop earrings which she would wear while just working around her house. She also had a love of Hershey chocolate kisses, Frank Sinatra, the movie Gone with the Wind, and visiting with family and friends in person or on the telephone.

But none of those loves compared to the love she had for her family. They always came first. Nona dedicated her life to her family. She met the love of her life, Wayne Huiras, by noticing a cute bus driver in Molalla. She went to work as a waitress in the Bus Depot just to be able to meet him. Her plan worked as they were married on April 25, 1948. Their marriage lasted until September 2, 1995 with Wayne's passing. Nona was his caregiver during his long illness.

Nona never remarried. She was able to live in the house they built in Molalla in 1962 until she experienced a series of TIA's (ministrokes) making it unsafe for her to live alone which lead her to the Guilford Senior Care Home on August 14, 2019. It was a blessing to have her only a few blocks away from her daughter's house. Betty and her husband were able to visit Nona everyday. During the Covid pandemic they had visits at her window for a year and 4 months. That was a blessing to Nona and her family.

Nona was loved by everyone who met her. She had a heart of gold and always had a sincere smile. Nona's Mom would say that Nona was born with a smile. She never had a stranger in her life. All who met her would immediately become a friend. Nona's long life and smiles were a gift and a blessing to everyone who met her. She will be greatly missed.

A funeral service was held on Nona's 96th birthday, December 6 at the Molalla Funeral Chapel. Committal service followed at the Clarkes Pioneer Cemetery, Mulino, Oregon. A gathering was held after the services at the Prairie House Inn in Molalla.

No words can express the appreciation for Providence Hospice and the Guilford Senior Care Home for their excellent care and support. It was easy to have them become members of Nona's family.

Remembrances may be made to Providence Hospice or the Guilford Senior Care Home. Please include Nona's name with your contribution.
