Ronald Wilmont Baker Jr., known affectionately as "Coach" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, in his hometown of Medford, Oregon. Born on July 16, 1941, in Medford, Ron lived a life marked by dedication to his community, a passion for education, and a love for athletics.

Ron's formative years were spent in the verdant valleys of Oregon where he excelled both academically and athletically. A proud graduate of Phoenix High School in 1960, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southern Oregon College in 1965, followed by a Master of Science in Education two years later. His academic achievements laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished career in teaching and coaching.

A standout athlete, Ron's prowess on the football field was recognized in 1964 when he was named an NAIA All-American. His skill and dedication led him to a memorable stint as a professional football player. However, Ron's true calling was in education and coaching. He dedicated 35 years to shaping the minds and talents of young students across various high schools in Oregon and California, including Rogue River High School, Molalla High School, Grants Pass High School, St. Marys High School and Crater High School, among others. He also brought his expertise to the collegiate level coaching with his brother Ray Baker Sr. at Southern Oregon University.

Ron's professional achievements were numerous. In 1973, he led the Women's Track Conference in Molalla, Oregon, to new heights, Assistant Football Coach with 1978 NSCIF Football High School Champions in Gridley, California. And later, he was honored as the Women's Basketball Coach of the Year in Live Oak, California. His impact extended beyond the court and field, as he received numerous Outstanding Teacher Awards in Vocational Education and as a Special Education Teacher. Ron's dedication to his students and athletes was unwavering, and his legacy as a mentor and educator remains unparalleled.

In addition to his educational career, Ron managed several successful commercial farms for 20 years. His expertise in permanent plantings and row crops reflected his deep connection to the land and his entrepreneurial spirit. Away from the classroom and the farm, Ron pursued his interests as a private pilot and hobby farmer, tending to his pigs, sheep, and goats at the family's original Baker-Estes homestead referred to as the "Cabin Hill".

Described by those who knew him as generous, selfless, and passionate, Ron was a man who gave of himself without expecting anything in return.
