Stanley Vanderwal


Stanley Vanderwal, 80, of Molalla died Feb. 6, 2012 at Willamette Falls Hospital.

He was born June 28, 1932 in Portland, Ore.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as a navigator. He lived in Molalla for about 47 years and taught choir at Molalla High School until his retirement in 1991. He also founded the Molalla Community Choir, which he directed for 13 years. He was also involved in church leadership and was a Cub Scout pack leader.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Molalla Christian Church, 223 E. 3rd St.

Memorial contributions can be made to Molalla Christian Church Missions, Medical Teams International or Mercy Corps.

Stanley Martin Vanderwal June 28, 1931 - Feb. 6, 2012

A lifelong educator, Stanley Vanderwal was born to Cornelius Martin Vanderwal and Madeline Rebecca (Smith) Vanderwal of Portland, Ore.

Stanley studied engineering at Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland and then attended Vanport Extension Center, the precursor to Portland State University.

Stanley received a political science degree from Willamette University, participating in the ROTC program, and then served in the U.S. Air Force prior to the Korean War as a navigator, achieving the rank of captain.

Stanley returned to Willamette, earning a degree in music education, where he also met his future wife, Elizabeth. After teaching in the communities Glendale, Ore. and Knappa-Svensen near Astoria, Ore., Stanley took a music teaching position in Molalla, where he taught for 27 years.

Stanley was active with Boy Scouts of America, both as a young man and in the Molalla community, where he served as pack leader of the local Cub Scout Pack 257 for many years.

Stanley was also very active in the Molalla Christian Church community.

After retiring from full-time teaching in 1991, Stanley continued following his passion for choral music, starting the Molalla Community Choir and directing if for 13 more years.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Anne (Laird) Vanderwal; brother, Norman (Mary); sister, Evelyn Steele; sons, David (Heidi), Paul (Kelly) and Richard (April) and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Molalla Christian Church on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012.

Memorial contributions can be made to Molalla Christian Church Missions Fund or Food Ministry, Mercy Corps or Medical Teams International.

Arrangements were handled by Molalla Funeral Home, Molalla.
